Week 1 - My Entrepreneurship Idea

My entrepreneurship idea is a website that focuses on selling, buying and trading college textbooks and books for college students. It will be similar to the way e-bay works except this is focused on college textbooks. College students already have to worry about the high prices of tuition. They do not need to worry about the high unfair prices of textbooks from the school bookstore. This website will have fair prices so students will always be saving money. The website will have different sections for different universities, and then different sections within for the different classes. This website will also have a chatroom where students can discuss classes and more. This website is for the benefit of the students, not the college textbook manufacturers or their distributors. I wished there was a website like my idea during the beginning of school years to make my life easier.

I think this website relates to all the IST 195 lectures because this idea has technology connecting people together. Technology is always improving and it is about time we had a website to help college students with their textbooks. Textbook prices are not fair and students are forced to buy them. On facebook, there is a Syracuse group for the students of the 2014 and people are constantly trying to sell and buy textbooks. Why do it on a website not meant for that? My website will provide a place where college students can help themselves. During one of the lectures, we discussed green computing. I think this website will help with the green initiative that is sweeping the nation because if we keep recycling each others books instead of buying new copies each year, we are using less paper.

This website will be a stepping stone to helping students with the issue of college textbooks. We talk about in class how much technology has changed over the years. Technology keeps improving and making our lives easier. I know that getting textbooks can be stressful at times because of how expensive they are. I think to myself how I am only using these books for half a year but yet, I'm spending more than a hundred dollars for each book. Shouldn't it be time where technology improves getting books for college? My website will be the place for college students to shop online for their books, which will result in them saving time AND money. Maybe after my website, college bookstores and such will stop overpricing us students that are spending enough money on their tuition.

  1. With the price of college text books today, i know a lot of students are really looking for ways to cut back their spending but still have the resources that they need to get a good education. Some companies such as http://www.chegg.com/ have popped up in the last couple years but i feel like every year there are more and more ways to buy, sell, rent, borrow textbooks. Definitely room within the market.

  2. Hi Jisu.
I totally agree with you 100% that college students already have to worry about tuition prices inflating. The amount of money we spend on textbooks and supplies can possible add up to be just as much as public university's one semester tuition. I remember I was a naive freshman who bought every single book from the University bookstore without checking anywhere else because I didn't want to be behind in my readings and worry about the long lines the first week of school. But, because of that I spent over $600 on 6 textbooks and a mini handbook. It's ridiculous the amount of money we spend on books every semester, not even a full academic school year.
Creating a database or website that only Syracuse University students can use sounds like a good idea. We won't have to worry about shipping rates or getting the book late. We could possibly even set up a system with face trades or even a fair where if people want to sell, buy, rent or trade their books, they must attend. Otherwise, it'll be their problem to find people on their own afterwards. Thanks for sharing! I think this is great!

  3. This is actually a really cool idea. I see posts all the time on the Syracuse Facebook groups about people who are looking to either purchase or sell textbooks throughout the semester. Textbooks are something that every college student must deal with, and no one enjoys finding out that the book they will never use costs upwards of 200 bucks. The creation of this website would benefit college students everywhere.
I like the idea of a chat room / some sort of direct connection between people on the site. It gives it a sort of social media aspect, something a lot of the public would enjoy.
    Great idea!

  4. I think this is a great idea and there are a lot of different options for you in terms of promoting it. Social media will be a huge tool you can utilize once you get this going because like you said, people have already begun to do this on social media websites, such as Facebook. It is also a good platform to do your advertising because majority of college students are on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc.

My only suggestion is to make sure that your website will stand out among your competitors because there are a lot of other similar businesses who aim to do the same thing such as chegg or amazon.com. I really like your "chat room" aspect of the website, it is unique and really differentiates it from the rest. It sounds like you're off to a good start.

    Good Luck Jisu! :)
